Lieldienas (Great days) = Easter




Nature all around us is waking up from winter sleep soon will be the day who Latvians greets as beginning of spring.
For Latvians, it is Great day or Easter, where the same word expresses the meaning and concept of event - day become greater (longer) than night.
In Great day because of Earth and Sun position day and night are equal lengths.
The future passage of Earth around the Sun daylight continues to rise longer and night shortens. Such a complete victory of light over darkness and the Sun revival of ancient Aryan peoples noted the solstice celebrations.
The Great day is celebrated three day in long year four days.
In Great days, in sun rise and in sunset, its shadow is moving towards in one single line in detection west-east, the line is called the solar path.
In nature sun path is marked in Great day by sun flowing stream, flowing traditions this steam water on this day has magical health and beauty power:

* To receive these gifts from nature is necessary to woke up whit sunrise and wash up in steam whose direction is west-east.

The most important Great day tradition is the swing, bird healing, egg painting, various games whit eggs and eating them.
Swing in Great days is promotion of fertility, this tradition is rooted in ancient past, in beginning of Aryan, and Latvians are the only Europeans who do it even today. By swinging, Latvians have held an ancient custom, which now are only in Indian religion.
Easter Spring swings has symbolic meaning, by swing, people energetic include them selves into nature awakening wave, whose being feels all living creature.
As one of the most typical Easter egg tradition is seen painting, cooking, different games with them, and egg eating. Egg painting, which is well known in many nations, is favorite Easter tradition also for Latvians.

Involvement of Easter egg is from ancient eggs cult - egg is a bringer of a new life. In ancient myths the egg symbolizes the sun and solar awakening, and a new life.
By cracking egg we are releasing the inside locked energy - that’s how in myths is represented the moment of birth.
In Latvian traditions Easter holidays are personified as the great wife, or three and four sisters, you can conclude that women is a symbol of fertility.
Woman is a new life "cradle" - Easter is celebration for reborn of nature that also is directly connected with female.
People spend Easter by going across mountain singing, and giving a promise to do it again next year - because mountain symbolizes sun position in the sky. (In Latvia as you know mountains are not that high as they are here) Easter sun is only halfway to the mountain peak, which is Midsummer.

Latvians Easter is the spring solstice celebration. Revival of Nature, the Sun worship festival, the light coming form the Sun as Suns daughter image. With this day begins a new work period in a peasant homestead. Various rituals are performed blessings of fertility and promotion of farmer's yard is made in the future prophecies. Solstice is a special time to create harmony with nature and myself. Easter is the solar oscillation between two opposite positions - one in the victory gained darkness, but after the Easter light, or day defeated night.
