Presentation for Latvia

I come from Riga – capital of Latvia.

From Riga to Ljubljana is 1379 km

I prepared some facts about Latvia and compared them whit Slovenia for example :

Latvia area is 64 589 km that is 3x times bigger than Slovenia (20.273 sq km)
The highest peek in Latvia is Gaiziņkalns 311 m but in Slovenia it is Triglav (2864 m) and it is 9x and a half times higher then Latvians.

Largest lake in Latvia is Lubāns 80, 7 sq km 3x times bigger than Slovenia’s Cerknica Lake 26 sq km

Latvia’s coast line extends for 531 kilometers, yes we have nice see area.
Population is 2 281 300 two millions and a half almost the same as Slovenians

Latvian language

Latvian is a Baltic language and is most closely related to Lithuanian, although the two are not mutually intelligible.

Traditions

The most favorite end most celebrated traditional celebration is Jāņi in 23 night June to 24 of June it is the midsummer night, usually celebrations continue till morning light, national food is cheese and bear. Every one goes out of city to country side – city’s at that time look deserted like ghost towns.

The people sing and dance, kindle fires and jump over them, make crowns from flowers. The greatest wonder of Jāņi is when young couples look for the fern blossom, according to belief, the fern produces a golden flower on this night, so many do find it that’s why no wonder that more children are born in Latvia each year at the end of March.

Christmas now days is more of quiet family celebration – the impact of Christianity has turned to quiet and calm celebration, but some of the old hearten traditions are still alive as well – one of them is the mummery disguised people go to neighboring houses trying to scare the evil spirits away (and get some snacks).

There must be at least nine different foods set on the Christmas table, always including peas, and all the peas must be eaten, so that there won’t be any tears the next year.

Latvians also celebrate:

Easter, with colored eggs; Martin day (Martinmas, whit traditional roast goose); Mothers days, Womens day and Name days. Every name has a specified calendar date.
Flower-giving is an essential part of celebrations.
